Fiesta® San Antonio started in 1891 as a one-parade event to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. That historic commemoration still takes place, but for more than a century, Fiesta® has grown into a celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultures and today is one of this nation’s premier festivals with an economic impact of more than $340 million. Funds raised by official Fiesta® events provide services to San Antonio citizens throughout the year.
Running for 11 days, there are over 100 Fiesta events taking place from April 24 – May 4, 2025. Although many people think of Chicken on a Stick at NIOSA, boudin balls at A Taste of New Orleans, and fried oysters at Oyster Bake when they think of Fiesta, there are events on the healthier side, too. Here is Dr. Smith’s guide to having a healthier Fiesta season.

The Chromosome 18 Registry & Research Society is proud to present the Annual 5K Starfish Dash Run/Walk & Health Fair for the 8th year! This FREE, official Fiesta event brings the San Antonio community together for a morning of family-friendly fun at the UT Health campus to support our special-needs kids and families.
Enjoy activities for the whole family including “Fort Sam’s Own” 323rd Army Band, face painting, cosplayers, health, wellness testing, and much more!
If there’s one thing in common with most Fiesta events, it’s a plethora of delicious food and beverage options. It’s easy to overindulge in the less-healthy food options available from vendors and bars, but it’s important to continue managing your diet – even during Fiesta.
Look for healthier options such as grilled chicken instead of breaded and fried chicken, fresh fruit, roasted vegetables, lean seafood, and maybe try a smoothie or aqua fresca instead of a margarita or beer.
And of course, drink lots of water and stay hydrated while participating in outdoor events!
